Why Is My AC’s Condensate Pan Overflowing?

Your air conditioner helps ensure your indoor comfort. If you notice your condensate pan overflowing, you should call your trusted cooling technician immediately. This problem could be due to any of the following culprits.

Blocked Drain Line

This is one of the most commonly overlooked reasons for overflowing. If there are issues in your drain line, the condensate won’t flow properly and could even back up into the system, damaging electrical components. Check the drain line properly, and if a blockage is preventing the condensate from flowing out, flush it out using a pipe-cleaning solution.

If there are no clogs in the line, but water isn’t properly draining, then the drain line might not be properly oriented. Condensate flows through the line with the help of gravity, but if the line is level or bent, the water might not be able to flow properly.

Tilted Pan

Before calling a HVAC tech, you should check the positioning of the condensate pan. The condensate pan is typically placed underneath evaporator coils, and you can see for yourself whether the pan is properly aligned or not. If it’s not aligned, this is probably the reason why water is trickling. Remember, a condensate pan is usually level, so if it has been knocked askew, adjust it accordingly.

Broken Condensate Pump

The condensate pump is responsible for pushing the collected water into the drain line. It begins pumping out the condensate as soon as the pump comes in contact with water. If your drip pan is overflowing, the pump might be broken.
