Ways to Keep Your Air Conditioning System Efficient

An efficient air conditioner can keep your home comfortable during summer and improve your indoor air quality. Running the AC can reduce humidity, pollen, mold, mildew and other airborne pollutants, which helps lower the chances of asthma and allergy attacks. Moreover, when you’re not operating your HVAC system correctly, your energy bills can increase, and the equipment suffers as well.

Here are tips to help keep your air conditioner stay efficient.

Change or Clean AC Filters

Depending on the kind of equipment you have and on the manufacturer’s recommendation, you should be replacing AC filters every one to three months. A filthy filter can restrict airflow and even freeze up the unit’s evaporator coil. It can also increase your cooling cost by up to 15% and reduce the lifespan of your AC. Keep in mind that filters are significantly cheaper than repairs and replacements. With a ductless split AC, you’ll be able to access a removable panel that will let you wipe the filter with a cloth.

Have Your AC Serviced Regularly

Regular air conditioning service ensures your unit stays efficient and lasts a long time. Before the warmer months, have a professional technician check and perform necessary adjustments or repairs to your AC. Being proactive with the maintenance of your equipment can also reduce the likelihood of breakdowns and the need for emergency repairs.

Avoid Cooling Empty Rooms

When running your AC, make sure that you close your bathroom, closet and cabinet doors. Turning off your AC when you leave can also help reduce your energy bills. However, if your cooling costs are still going up, consider investing in an HVAC zoning system. It would allow you to change temperatures for specific rooms in the house. A zoned system can aid in minimizing excessive energy use.

Get a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat can give you significant savings on your energy costs yearly. It automatically adjusts the temperature of your home when you’re away or at work. Today, there are even smart thermostats that you can control through your phone even when you’re not at home.

Also, according to research, the human body can adapt to the temperature of its surroundings within just a week or two. Did you know that you can reduce your cooling bill by up to 3% for every degree you raise the temperature?

Don’t Delay Repairs

It’s always a good idea to contact a professional as soon as you notice something different with your AC. If your equipment is producing weird noises, smells or not effectively cooling your spaces, call a professional technician immediately. Addressing issues while they are small can help avoid costly repairs or early AC failure.

Close Windows and Doors

Leaving your windows and doors open while the AC is running can reduce the efficiency of your equipment. When you allow unconditioned air inside, the air conditioner needs to work harder to keep your spaces comfortable, straining the unit and increasing your energy costs. Make sure to close all your windows and doors closed when the AC is running. The same applies to the exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom as they push cooled air out of the house.

Use Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans move air around the room, helping your AC run more efficiently. They create a “wind chill” effect that makes you feel comfortable at higher temperatures. Moreover, using ceiling fans will save you money on energy bills and reduce the wear and tear on the AC. There are even some fans that you can reverse during the colder months to improve the efficiency of your heating system.
